"Straddie" as it is known to regular visitors, covers 27,530 hectares, making it one of the largest sand islands in the world. The elongated island shields much of the southern part of Moreton Bay and its smaller islands from the ocean swells.
The island attracts 4WDers, anglers, surfers and beach lovers to its expansive stretches of sandy coast and the Island offers a range of accommodation and holiday infrastructure. There is land based whale watching from Point Lookout during winter and world class surfing throughout the year on the breaks that surround the North Gorge headland. The ideal way to see the Island is by 4 Wheel Drive, but there are many stunning coastal walks and a mountain bike and whale watching map are an easier and more environmentally sound alternative.
